Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim received the award at the Global Summit of Women 2015, held in Sao Paulo, Brazil on May 15.
A ministry statement said the award is introduced for the first time by GlobeWomen, an international organisation championing women empowerment in the workforce.
The award highlights the commitment of the federal government in implementing the women’s empowerment agenda, as set out in the ‘Beijing Declaration and the ‘Platform of Action’.
According to the statement here Sunday, it is hoped the award will encourage Malaysia to intensify its efforts to strengthen the role of women in the country.
Meanwhile, some countries including Germany, South Africa and El Salvador praised Malaysia’s efforts to ensure the participation of women in the workforce, especially those who had to quit work for the interest of the family.
The accolade was announced during the ministerial roundtable, which is the platform in which ministers share the projects they have undertaken for the development of women in their respective countries.
“During the presentation, Rohani also touched on the ministerial and government target to ensure there were 30 per cent of women at decision-making levels, as well as the establishment of the ’30 per cent Women Club Malaysia’.
“A programme for less fortunate women was also presented, in which focus was given to the concepts of ‘productive welfare’ and ‘social innovation’ implemented by the Social Welfare Department,” said the statement.
